Canyon del Oro and Salpointe got together Tuesday at Randolph in what has to be a preview of the Division II state golf tournament (late October). Sabino is the only other D-II team from Southern Arizona with qualifying team scores.

Defending state champion Jaime Waltmire took the top spot for CDO and he was matched against Salpointe standout Trent Terry. Both came in with the low scores from the day with a 36.

Terry made an 80-foot birdie on the 8th hole to keep pace with Waltmire.

Frankie Wu and Spencer Arnaud followed with a 39, keeping both teams tied at 75 after the first group came in. Arnaud finished in 9th place at state last year for the Lancers while Wu, along with his brother Eric, played for Ironwood Ridge before moving over to CDO this year.

Chris Meyers posted a 39 for CDO and Ryan Tanner a 42 for Salpointe. Meyers came in tied for 38th last year. Jake Dutson scored a 44 and Hunter Lowery gave Salpointe a one-shot lead after the second group came in with a 40.

Everything fell to the third group and CDO’s Chris Cotsones came through with a 37, giving the Dorados a 151 for the match.

Salpointe finished six strokes back with a 157 after Lucky Streiff (44) and Troy Terry (47) came in for the day. Eric Wu scored a 42.

Sabino will also be formidable at state with standouts Joel Berkson and Billy Comeaux leading the way for the Sabercats.

Carmelo Padilla of Flowing Wells has qualified as an individual and there are several players close to posting the required five qualifying scores as individuals in D-II and they include, Aaron Esquivel (Catalina), Ryan Kauffman (Catalina Foothills) and Derek Lozier (Sahuarita).

The Ironwood Ridge boys team is in for Division I and Cienega should also get in. Jimin Yoo of Buena is in as is his teammate Briggs Duce. Gabriel Borboa (Tucson) and Bobby Padilla (Sunnyside) are on the edge of qualifying.

Big matches left:
Sabino plays at Cienega on Tuesday, October 9.
Salpointe at Ironwood Ridge on Thursday, October 18.
Buena at Cienega on Thursday, October 18.
