Desert Christian takes down Snowflake, 3-0

by on Oct. 07, 2012, under Sports

The Eagles (10-1-1) took out the AIA/Maxpreps number two seed Snowflake during their annual Old Pueblo Invitational (10-5-2) last month but those matches do not count towards state seedings. As luck would have it, they had to prove themselves all over again last Friday when they made a trip up north for a rematch.

When it was said and done, Desert Christian returned home with a 3-0 victory and a possible jump to replace Snowflake as the two seed. The fall soccer seedings are updated every Tuesday.

Game update from Coach Mark Harting:

In the 27th minute senior captain Sara Boice [7th assist] found junior captain Jenna Cray open, feeding her the ball. Jenna beat the right Snowflake defender working her way into the 12 yard line, and shooting a left footed rocket that scorched the grass, making its way under the Snowflake keepers arm and threading the ball just inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.

10 minutes later, Cray was making another run on the Snowflake defense when she was knocked off her feet at the 25 yard line, setting up a Desert Christian direct kick. Boice was called upon to deliver, and man did she ever.

Assistant Coach Cray said “Sara [12th goal] put that ball inside a 4 foot area, the only area that ball would fit in order to score.” The ball reached the upper “V” far post, an area where the Snowflake keeper couldn’t make a play. With that kick, the Eagles took a 2-0 edge into halftime, closing out a strong final 10 minutes of the first half.

After switching sides to start the 2nd half, the Eagles continued their control of the game, taking advantage of every Snowflake mistake. The Eagle “D” was superb, and kept Snowflake off balance. In the meantime, the offense continued to keep pressure on the Snowflake “D”.

In the 50th minute, Boice [8th assist] found Cray in the middle of the pitch. Cray took the pass and launched a wicked 30 yard shot [8th goal]. With the keeper being off her line all she could do is reach into thin air and watch the ball find the back of the net. With a 3-0 lead, the Eagles tightened up their defense and shut down any attempt by Snowflake to get back into the game.

“ These amazing 12 have Faith, Hope, Love, and Trust in each other. They are now 9-1-1, having started the season with only 9 players, and now coming to games with 12. Their love for God, for each other, and for the joy of competing, touches my heart. There are many things I’ve coached in my 23 years, but you can’t coach the heart. These Mighty 12 have hearts of gold. They are far from living a dream, they’re giving hope to anyone who’s every been told “That’s impossible,” because as a Christian School, we know that “With God All Things Are Possible!” Coach Harting.

Lexi Rorrer, junior goalie just recorded her 40th win in 49 career games. She also added completed her 19th shutout and lowered her goals per game to 0.79/GG over her 3 year career.

Desert Christian went on to defeat Holbrook 10-0 on Saturday and will travel to Chino Valley on Tuesday.
