Football seedings updateby Andy Morales on Oct. 23, 2012, under Sports
The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) will release the final AIA/Maxpreps seedings/brackets on Saturday, October 27 at 9 am during its aia365 radio show. Till then, the seedings released today will give most teams a chance to see where they stand.
The program can be picked up on 620 AM and 860 AM in the Phoenix area or you can drive up to Wolfley’s Neighborhood Grill at Desert Ridge Marketplace in Phoenix to watch the bracket show live.
The AIA will also release the final seedings and brackets for girls volleyball during the show.
Remember, the top three teams from each of the three sections will get an automatic berth to the playoffs and the final seven teams (to make 16 total) will come from the seedings.
12 Buena (7-2)
If Buena beats Sunnyside (5-4) on Friday then they are guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs or something is wrong with the formula. The Blue Devils could knock them out.
16 Tucson High (6-3)
Tucson High needs to beat Flowing Wells (2-7) on Friday and hope that Highland (6-3) loses to Red Mountain (7-2) in order to get in. Highland is currently ranked 14th but they are taking up the last open spot because Section I only has two teams in the top 16 as of today.
Cibola (6-3) is the third team from Section I and they will bump the number 16 seed even though they are seeded 19th.
Here’s the catch: Red Mountain is one of the D-I powers so, even if Highland loses to them, they might actually stay in the top 16. Flowing Wells is seeded 37th in D-II so, even if Tucson beats them (as they should) they might actually fall out of playoff contention.
1 Ironwood Ridge (9-0)
The Ridge is in. They will stay the top seed if they can get past Salpointe (9-1) on Friday. A loss to Salpointe should keep them in the top four anyway.
5 Salpointe (9-1)
Salpointe is in and should host a first round game win or lose but you never know with the new formula. Beat Ironwood Ridge and they might climb into the top three.
7 Cienega (7-2)
The biggest surprise in Arizona. They have the final Section II automatic berth. They do play lowly D-III Douglas (39th 1-8) on Friday so they might slip out of the top eight even if they win.
9 Mountain View (6-3)
Mountain View plays 41 seed Cholla (0-9) on Friday so they are in the same predicament as Cienega. It all depends on the Maxpreps formula…
11 Sahuaro (7-2)
Sahuaro hosts D-III power Sabino (9-0) on Friday. Beat Sabino and they might vault into the top eight. Even if they lose, they are in (or should be).
18 Rincon (5-4)
Rincon plays D-III Palo Verde (3-6) on Friday. If they win and 16 Fairfax (6-3) and 17 Willow Canyon (5-4) loses then they might sneak in with the final spot. Just might.
2 Sabino (9-0)
They are in and look to stay in the top four where they belong. If they lose at Sahuaro (7-2) then the computer may penalize them but not by much.
6 Sahuarita (9-0)
Sahuarita hosts 28 Catalina (4-5). If Sahuarita wins then they should get to host a first round game. Imagine a Phoenix area team having to travel to Sahuarita…..they will complain.
14 Nogales (7-2)
The Apaches will host Pueblo (3-6) on Friday. Lose and they are out of the playoffs for sure.
12 Empire (6-3)
Loss to Palo Verde last week killed the Ravens. Now, they will be hosting Walden Grove (5-4). Empire is in the playoffs but only they can decide where.
17 Walden Grove (5-4)
The first-year team needs to upset Empire to get in. Either way, it has been a successful season for the school.
5 Thatcher (8-1)
Thatcher travels to 33 Bisbee (1-8). It’s a no win situation. Not many seeding points to be found in that game for Thatcher.
11 Benson (6-3)
Benson hosts 21 Tombstone (5-4) on Friday. Benson is in.
13 Willcox (5-3)
Willcox travels to 26 Miami (3-6). If Willcox loses then they might be staying home rather than making the playoffs.
15 San Manuel (6-3)
San Manuel will host D-IV Florence (4-5) on Friday. San Manuel might not make the playoffs.
18 Pusch Ridge (5-4)
The Lions will host D-IV Rio Rico (3-6) on Friday in a must win situation and then they will other teams to lose.
