Volleyball seedings corrected by AIA: Direct impact on local schools

Ironwood Ridge beat Salpointe on Thursday night. The Lancers will not know where they stand until Saturday morning. Andy Morales Photos.
The AIA posted this note on the seedings for girls volleyball earlier today:
“Note: The 2012 girls volleyball seedings calculations up to October 23, 2012 were including some invitational tournament games. This was corrected on October 24, and affected the positions of several schools.”
Evidently, Maxpreps incorrectly included invitational games in their calculations. Those incorrect calculations hurt Southern Arizona teams the most.
There was a dramatic shift in favor of Southern Arizona schools which, apparently, caused quite a stir for the Phoenix teams that found themselves on the outside looking in after thinking they made the playoffs.
The final seedings come out Saturday morning on aia365.com’s radio program.
Ironwood Ridge coach Bill Lang told me he discovered the error when he realized Southern Arizona teams were under represented in the seedings released on Tuesday morning.
The error seems to have only changed Division I-III rankings with Rincon getting the biggest boost from 19 to 9 and Safford suffering the most from 3 to 11.

Ironwood Ridge over Salpointe 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 28-26, 25-15).
Salpointe faced Ironwood Ridge Thursday night at home in a game they thought was “do or die” because of the incorrect seedings released on Tuesday. It still might turn out that way for the Lancers after they dropped a match at Basha on Tuesday and then lost to the Nighthawks on home Thursday.
Still, sitting at 15 instead of 16 has a bit more comfort but, as stated before, the final seedings will not be released until Saturday morning.
Ironwood Ridge took a slow but sure lead through the first set to win it 25-17 but Salpointe tied it up in the second set after pulling away from a 21-21 tied to win it 25-21.
Ironwood Ridge took a 15-9 lead in the third set but Salpointe closed in at 17-18 before Ironwood Ridge went up 23-19.
Salpointe scored four points to tie the set at 23-23 and then went up 25-24 and again at 26-25 but Aunesty Jantz scored twice after Jordan Weatherless tied it up at 26-26 to give The Nighthawks a 28-26 victory.
Salpointe went up 4-0 in the fourth set but Ironwood Ridge tied it up quickly at 5-5 and then pulled away to win the final set 25-15.
