FALL SOCCER: Desert Christian boys & girls to play for championships
by Andy Morales on Nov. 02, 2012, under SportsIt will be a championship double-header for Desert Christian Saturday afternoon after the boys beat Payson 4-3 in overtime on Friday night.
The girls will play for the Division IV championship at noon against Blue Ridge and the boys will face Blue Ridge at 2:30 pm. Both matches will be played at Gilbert Campo Verde.
The Desert Christian boys are the top seed and they will face 2 seed Blue Ridge for the third time this year. Each team has a 1-0 victory in the series this year.
Blue Ridge has won the last three titles in a row and eight overall while Desert Christian has won two.
Payson scored first to go up 1-0 but Desert Christian tied it up on a cross from Ben Brandon to Allen Bradley about 15 minutes in. Desert Christian took a 2-1 lead after Ryan Barents headed in a flip throw-in from Luke Gleason.
Payson scored twice late in the second half to go up 3-2 but Brandon scored to tie it at 3-3 with about three minutes left in regulation.
Barents headed a ball off a Payson defender into the net four minutes into the first overtime to go up 4-3 but each team still had to finish that over time period and then another 10-minute period.
On the girls side, Blue Ridge comes in as the top seed and Desert Christian is the 2 seed. Blue Ridge is undefeated and this will be the first match between the two teams this year.
