2012 Southern Arizona Golf All-Stars

by on Nov. 07, 2012, under Sports

The dilemma last year was either to reward consistency or a champion.

I decided to reward both last year and it appears to be an issue this year on the boys side again. It was hard to choose between state champion Jaime Waltmire (Canyon del Oro) and his consistent teammate Logan France and a case could have been made for both.

We are in that same situation again this year with state champion Billy Comeaux (Sabino) and the golfer with the lowest average (Gary P. Durrenberger Award) in Waltmire.

Waltmire backed up his state championship last year with the best season by any Southern Arizona golfer this year. His stroke average was 36.45. No other golfer broke 37 including Comeaux.

Comeaux, by contrast, seemed to be picking up steam at the right time and it led to a two-stroke victory at the Division II state championship.

Can’t overlook a champion and you can’t overlook the best.

On the girls side, Salpointe’s Krystal Quihuis was both the best and the Division II state champion.

Her stroke average of 35.35 was a stroke and a half over her nearest competition in CDO standout sophomore Morgan Messick (36.93). Quihuis and Messick were so far out in front of the competition that the nearest stroke average after Messick was another stroke and a half.

The two did the same thing at the state tourney where Quihuis finished with a 137 and Messick had a 141. The next competitor came in far behind with a 148. I would have loved to see the two paired up on a championship Saturday but the AIA does not schedule championships that way.

Maybe, someday, they will be paired up on Championship Sunday in the LPGA….

Last year, Messick had the lowest stroke average and Quihuis was the state champion. Messick just ran into a more determined Quihuis this fall. Not taking anything away from Messick, but Quihuis is the sole girls golfer of the year this time.

Lady Lancer coach Michele Murphy had to work through a breast cancer scare before she could even think about taking her girls to the practice tees this fall. She came back from one of the most difficult things that life can hand to a woman and she led her team to back-to-back state championships.

All I can say is don’t get in her way.

Salpointe had the lowest stroke average as a team and then won the D-II title by 64 strokes. Murphy is the easy choice for girls coach of the year.

The D-I girls coach of the year goes to John Sugameli of Marana. In a division usually dominated by Cienega, Sugameli has his team close behind Tucson in stroke average but his girls have put in more rounds of work.

John Farbarik was unable to pull off another boys state title (would have been his third in a row)

when the Dorados came up only seven shots back of the state champions this year but his team came in two and a half strokes up on everyone else in the regular season.

Four of the top golfers wore the Dorado uniform this fall. Some may say it’s easy to win with talent like that but I’ve seen him coach and I’ve seen him offer grip and strategy advice to golfers who were not on his team and I know of his work with the Southern Arizona Junior Golf Association (SAJGA).

With a nod to Ryan Bais of Ironwood Ridge (Obvious D-I coach of the year) and Salpointe’s Jim Flannery, Farbarik is the 2012 boys coach of the year.

The All-Star list will be completed after spring golf takes place for D-III. (Ajo, Benson, Bisbee, Desert Christian, Duncan, Empire, Immaculate Heart and Pusch Ridge).

Oh, and I go seven deep on my lists. If I missed anyone, I apologize. (I made a slight mistake in the girls All-Star list but I fixed it). Only a first and second team for the girls D-I. Just not enough depth in that division this year.

NOTE: The Ironwood Ridge girls play D-II while the boys play D-I.
