The boys of Rio Rico captured the school’s fourth state championship since 2000. Head coach Stephen Schadler earned the school’s first title in 2000 before leading the team to their high finish this fall. (Rodger Bristow coached Rio Rico to titles in 2006 and 2008 before Schadler returned to the team.)

It was Southern Arizona’s lone team championship in Cross Country this year although Andy Trouard (Salpointe) won the Division II individual race and Kyle Cajero (Pusch Ridge) won the D-IV individual race.

Not to be overlooked in all of this is Rincon/UHS standout Ryan Silva who won the D-I/S-II sectional meet and finished second in the state. His consistency easily earns him a high spot as the top performer in D-I and D-II.

While Trouard and Cajero share the Runners of Year honors, it was runners such as Silva and Rio Rico’s Robert Contreras who kept the competition going all year. Throw in division leaders Zach

Alderete (St Augustine), Andrew Garcia and Jordan Hellebuyck (Canyon del Oro) along with Cal Skilsky (Ironwood Ridge) and Southern Arizona had a formidable logjam at the top with at least a half dozen more runners ready to fill in.
