2012 Division IV Soccer All-Stars
by Andy Morales on Nov. 18, 2012, under SportsOf the 13 teams that make up the girl’s side of Division IV soccer, only Desert Christian is from Southern Arizona. Their section includes Blue Ridge, Payson and Show Low.
The team played most of the year with only 10 players but they still managed to somehow earn a 2 seed and made it to the state championship match where they lost to top seed Blue Ridge 4-2.
The Eagles represented our end of the state and they did it with two of the best players regardless of division in senior Sara Boice and junior Jenna Cray.
Boice became the top scorer in Desert Christian history (53) and she scored two goals in the quarterfinals, the winning goal in the semifinals and scored the team’s last goal in the final.
Cray added 17 goals and 15 assists and she kicks corner kicks with both legs. Cray also cashed in on three hat tricks. She is ready to take over Boice’s spot as team leader next year.
The boy’s side of D-IV soccer features a full compliment of teams from Southern Arizona with Academy of Tucson, Benson, Desert Christian, Immaculate Heart, San Miguel, St. Augustine, St. Gregory, Willcox and Alta Vista.
Oddly, Alta Vista was placed in Section I with teams from Show Low and Holbrook while the other eight teams were all in Section II.
Desert Christian earned the top seed going into the state tournament and they were joined by other tournament teams from the south; Alta Vista, Benson and Willcox.
Desert Christian lost the title match to Blue Ridge, 2-0, but they showed why they were the best from Southern Arizona after they took out Willcox in a close match to reach the semifinal round.
Desert Christian has a handful of players that can compete at any level of soccer. Of that group, goalie Gabe Fennema is generally considered one of the top in the state at his position.
Then you have their trio of standouts that combined for 61 goals and 33 assists. Arguably one of the most imposing set of forwards in the state, Allen Bradley, Ben Brandon and
Ryan Barents are almost indistinguishable on the pitch.
