Boys Preseason Basketball Tournament updates
by Andy Morales on Nov. 20, 2012, under SportsThe first day of the Salpointe Tipoff Classic got off with a wild game between Sabino and Amphitheater.
Amphitheater only returns five players from last year when they finished 30-4 and lost to Peoria 50-48 in the Division II state championship game. Sabino, on the other hand, finished 7-22 and looks to make a run this year.
The Sabercats got a huge game from senior guard Jameson Siek (28 points) and another strong performance from junior standout Matt Bushman (13) to help build a lead that reached 17 points (45-28) with 6:06 left in the third quarter.
Amphi would cut into the lead slowly and would enter the fourth quarter down 56-45. Sabino would take a 64-52 lead with 5:14 left in the game but that was the last time the Sabercats would score.
The Panthers went on a 11-0 run to end the game but came up short 64-63. Bushman fouled out of the game and that helped to jump start Amphi’s run. Bushman had collected four blocked shots and clogged up the middle but the Panthers were able to drive to the basket with him out of the game.
Sabino also took a couple of quick shots near the end of the game even though there is no shot clock in high school. That, and the aggressive play of Donald Selig (19 points) and Michael Perkins (16 points) made things close.
Nogales and Palo Verde played close with Nogales taking a slim 37-31 lead at the half and 57-44 after the third period but Nogales built a 72-54 lead with 4:11 left in the game and coasted from there.
Bryan Cervantes scored 18 points for Nogales but he hurt his right wrist early in the fourth quarter and had to leave the game and sat on the bench with an ice bag on his wrist.
Andres Marquez led Nogales with 28 points from his point guard position. Ezini Ugbisien scored 18 for Palo Verde and Derek Wilson added 17.
Salpointe’s 79-46 victory over Santa Rita got away from the Eagles early as the Lancers took a 24-7 lead after the first period.
Salpointe took a 52-25 lead at the half and played out the rest of the game. With constant substitutions, Salpointe had plenty of leaders with Hunter Lowry scoring 16 points. Corey Smith scored 15 to lead Santa Rita.
Catalina Foothills ended the night with a 75-44 win over Rincon/UHS.
Austin Nehls paced Foothills early and finished with 20 points to lead all scorers. Chaz Mack added 18.
Asha Esprit scored 19 for Rincon. There were three dunks on the night (Salpointe’s Jaylyn Juan and Palo Verde’s Seantre Luster-Smith) but it was Esprit’s alley-oop dunk from Kevionte Alexander that proved to be the best.
Rincon pulled to within 54-41 after three periods but they could only get three points thee rest of the way.
