Some early action from the Boyd Baker Tournament held at Sahuaro high school on Wednesday night.
Salpointe beat Amphitheater 56-24 with Haley Howell leading all scorers with 14 points. Brooke Prososki-Green added 12 for the Lancers and Maggie McEvoy scored 8.
Andrea Mada scored 10 for Amphi and Cicily Defour scored 5.
Tucson High beat Marana 46-24 in the other early game. Moana Halaufia scored 7 for Marana and Kortnee Day added 6.
Christina Rupp scored 14 to lead the Badgers, Jazmyne Redmond scored 13 and Alexis Cortez scored 10. Cortez made the play of the day with a behind the back-reverse layup.
Casey Wortley scored 13 points to lead Ironwood Ridge over Sahuarita. Alyssa Madlangbayan scored 9 and Lexy Ram added 8.
Danielle Teso scored 9 points for Sahuarita.
Pusch Ridge is playing without the services of sophomore Moriah Roters due to an ankle sprain. Roters is probably the best rebounder from Southern Arizona.
Still, the Lions got past Sunnyside thanks to 20 points from point guard Gabrielle Courtney, 13 from Olivia Christian and 12 from Noelle Soltero.
Yesenia Fragoso scored 13 for Sunnyside and Jasmine Hernandez and Gabi Garcia each scored 5.
In other late action, Palo Verde moved past Catalina 50-44, CDO got past Nogales 44-38, Buena took care of Empire 53-14 and Sahuaro beat Pueblo 63-19.
Bracket play continues on Friday at Sahuaro with the championship game scheduled for 4:30 pm on Saturday.
The tournament is named after long-time educator and sports official Boyd Baker who passed away in 1999.
Baker was one of my college professors at the University of Arizona in the early 1980s. I, along with many of my contemporaries in the program of Exercise and Sport Sciences at the time (Cienega baseball coach Tony Gabusi, Palo Verde baseball/soccer coach Jim Mentz, former Sunnyside wrestling coach Bobby DeBerry, Ironwood Ridge basketball coach Brian Peabody, former CDO softball coach Kelly Fowler, the late gymnastics coach Kim Bird, former CDO softball coach and current Ironwood Ridge educator Dee Dinota….the list goes on and on) touched base with Baker from time to time.
So many of our current coaches and community leaders went through that program at that time, it’s sad to think Arizona dropped their Physical Education program a few years ago…
