Sabino goalie Daniela Sanchez makes one final save as time was about to expire in Sabino’s 2-1 victory over Rincon. Alyssa Rankin (14) tied the game up in the 43rd minute but could not connect on this header attempt in front of Sanchez. Andy Morales Photo.

The Tucson High girls sprinted out to a 4-0 win over Pusch Ridge. The Badgers took control of the ball early utilizing their size and passing game against the smaller school.

Sophomore Corina Leyva scored in the 3rd minute on a pass from senior Savannah Quintana and then Quintana scored in the 9th minute on an assist from junior Aracely Romero.

Quintana is one of only four seniors on Tucson’s roster. It is a team overloaded with 10 sophomores and four freshmen according to head coach Marcela Zepp. Romero went on to score an unassisted goal in the 34th minute and the Quintana came up big again with another goal in the 42nd on an assist from sophomore Marisa Leyva.

Quintana had to leave the game after she suffered an ankle injury with 13 minutes left.

Pusch Ridge is led by first-year coach Micah Coate and he has his team headed in the right direction with early season matches against higher division teams.

Next up, the Pusch Ridge boys had a difficult time tracking the Tucson High boys with only two seniors on their roster.

Beto Rivera scored on an assist from Francisco Mendoza in the 7th minute to out the Badgers up 1-0 and then David Ramirez scored an unassisted goal to put them up 2-0 in the 9th.

The teams remained even for a while but River put one in again in the 32nd minute to give Tucson a 3-0 lead at the half. Jacob Zepp scored in the 37th minute to make it -0.

Pusch Ridge got on the board with an unassisted goal in the 41st minute by sophomore Aaron Penazek. It was only the second goal given up by Tucson at the tournament.

Julian Gaona scored in the 55th and then Anthony Negrete scored in the 61st to give Tucson the 6-1 win.

One of the best games of the day came between the girls Mountain View and Palo Verde. Palo Verde lost last year’s Division III state title match to Estrella Foothills 3-2 in overtime and Mountain View is expected to go deep in the D-I playoffs this year.

Mountain View went up 2-0 on a goal from Brenna Aguilar (Justene Kesterson) in the 20th and Kesterson (Aguilar) in the 23rd.

The lead would not last long after Titan freshman Janet Squire scored unassisted in the 24th.

Mountain View appeared to be playing for the win and the game remained in their favor 2-1 until Taylor Kruse netted a ball from 30 yards out to tie it up 2-2 in the 57th minute.

Mountain View attempted to turn it back on and Kesterson had a couple of chances to score again as did Palo Verde standout Jasmine Stokes but it remained tied until the 68th when Laura Pimenta found Kesterson on the right side and Kesterson booted it in from close range for the 3-2 win.

A long drive from Pusch Ridge to Salpointe gave us the next great game of the day with Sabino winning 2-1 late in the match against Rincon/UHS.

Maddi Quinn scored on an assist from Sierra Heredia in the 25th minute to give Sabino the lead and the teams played even until Alyssa Rankin tied it up in the 43rd unassisted.

It looked like the game would end in a 1-1 tie but Megan Richardson scored in the 65th on an assist from Devyn Hunley to salvage a 2-1 win.

Sabino took out the 2-seeded Flagstaff team last year in the D-II state playoffs and lost Ashley Ross and Addison Brown to graduation but they come back loaded as does Rincon with nine seniors including Elena Bauer.
