2012 Southern Arizona Girls Volleyball All-Stars
by Andy Morales on Dec. 01, 2012, under SportsDivision I: Rincon coach Alysha Ramirez gets the nod due to her winning record against her top rival Tucson High and her higher seed at state earned by the year-long performance of her junior middle standout Taylor Reiter.
The individual play of Tucson senior hitter Carly Trueman cannot be overlooked, however, especially in head to head competition between Tucson and Rincon. Reiter and Truman’s stats are almost identical although Reiter has a higher kill percentage overall.
Reiter a slight edge on performing for her team. As an individual, however, Trueman has to get the nod.
For all intents and purposes, the two awards are equal in this division.
Division II: Bill Lang guided his Ironwood Ridge team to the semifinal round where he fell to eventual state champion Flagstaff. No other Southern Arizona school got out of the first round in either of the top two Divisions.
True, he has another all-star roster but so does everyone else in Southern Arizona in D-II. I somehow managed to fit 40 top-level players into four teams of ten. I know I messed up here and there but it was the best I could do at the time. If I did it again it would probably look different.
Aunesty Jantz may only be a sophomore but the Ironwood Ridge outside hitter was key to the Lang’s success. On a team full of standouts, Jantz took complete control at times and she did it against some of the best Phoenix had to offer.
Thanks, to Lang’s scheduling, not many other Southern Arizona players can say they went up against the best in Phoenix in a regulation-regular season match.
Jantz, get D-II player of the year honors and Cienega’s Stephanie Mendivil earned top performer for the division.
Mendivil almost single-handedly willed Cienega past Ironwood Ridge in the first round of the playoffs. If not for Jantz, Cienega might have advanced that night.
Division III: Heather Moore-Martin’s Catalina squad made it to the post season and they did it without current Pima standout and last year’s Southern Arizona player of the year, Courtney Pitts.
Oh, but they had an athlete named Madison Irwin. Like Jantz for Ironwood Ridge, Irwin never left the court. Back row? No problem. Kills? No problem. Digs? No problem. Serving? No problem.
Jantz, Irwin, Mendivil, Reiter and Trueman all had legitimate arguments for Southern Arizona’s top honor. I cannot recall another year like this.
There was no single dominant player that carried her team to a championship. Throw in a couple of others like Haley Howell of Salpointe and Kerry Lane of Canyon del Oro and the logjam gets even harder to cut through.
If Jordan Abalos of Safford played in Tucson or Phoenix then she might also be in the mix but when it comes down to it, Jantz and Irwin were the top two players of the year for Southern Arizona.
The performances put in by Reiter, Trueman and Mendivil earned them top honors as the best performers in Southern Arizona. Again, I would accept anyone one of the five as the best. Reiter and Jantz will battle it out next year.
Division IV: Becky Motes’ Thatcher team made it to the semifinal round with Shiann White leading the way. Next year should be Tanque Verde’s year.
Division V: Russ Sullivan led Desert Christian to a 5 seed with a player I like to compare to Irwin. Nikki Helin is everywhere on the Desert Christian court. The Eagles lose Lauren McMillen but they will be the team to beat once again next year.
