Buena beats team from Australia, updated winter tourneys & basketball rankings

Besides winning the Northwest Desert Classic, the Buena Colts hosted Newington College of Sydney, Australia on Saturday, January 5.

Newington College is now 2-1 on their tour of the United States after they fell to Buena 72-60 in overtime.

According to Buena coach Dave Glasgow, RaShawn Avery finished with a career high 34 points, including 5-6 from the free throw line in overtime. Rod Springer had 15 points. Gilbert Pinkney had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Lewis Haley led Newington with 21 and Jack Jones had 16.

The Sabino girls went 4-0 to capture the Tombstone Shootout over the break – a few days after going 3-2 at the Lady Badgers Winter Classic in Prescott.
