Despite what Basha coach Mike Garcia says about the Flowing Wells Invitational not being the toughest in the state anymore, the participants and the results prove otherwise.

Garcia told the Phoenix media that the Division I/Section III Tournament was “…the new Flowing Wells” but he failed to mention that that is a state playoff event and is not considered an invitational – not even close.

You might as well say the actual state tournament is the toughest invitational, heck, the Olympics would be right there too. Garcia took his squad to the Red Mountain Duals this year instead after finishing in 17th place at Flowing Wells last year….

Sunnyside stormed back from a third place finish last year behind champion Ironwood Ridge and second place Cibola to cruise to a 240 to 169 win over second place Mesa Mountain View this year.

With 10 wrestlers placing in the top six, the Blue Devils had the championship won before the finals took place. Sergio Miranda won the 120 division and Gabriel Gonzales the 195.

Sunnyside won the McClintock Wrestling Invitational earlier this season.

The most exciting match of the night was between Bailey Janis of Marana Mountain View and Juaqin Olivas of Sunnyside in the 113-pound class. Janis was undefeated (34-0) entering the final but Olivas tied their match up at 4-4 with 40 seconds left in the final period.

With his streak on the line, Janis was able to flip Olivas in the final 12 seconds and, although Olivas was able to avoid a pin, Janis collected his final two points for the win with only seconds remaining.
