Mountain View wins late against CDO againby Andy Morales on Jan. 25, 2013, under Sports
Mountain View (14-1) has had an incredible run this year with a big win over Tucson High (11-3) and a sweep over local rivals Ironwood Ridge (5-8) and Canyon del Oro (10-4). Their only loss in games that count came against Pusch Ridge (9-5) early in the season.
Head coach Niki Melchiori and her five seniors were denied a playoff spot last year due to an error in the old Power Point system but they should not be denied this year. Not only are the Mountain Lions playing for a sectional berth, the team is on the edge of hosting a Division I first round playoff game.
The Dorados pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year with their win over Flowing Wells two weeks ago but they have also been swept by Pusch Ridge and Mountain View.
Their 50-49 loss to Mountain View on January 15 came after the Dorados were outscored 17-8 in the fourth period. Senior Lauren Reece scored 22 points to pace Mountain View’s comeback in that game and she scored 13 in Mountain View’s 41-38 victory at CDO on Thursday night.
With the score tied 38-38, senior Melody McLaughlin made a 3-pointer from the corner with 6 seconds left to complete another comeback victory. Sophomore Hailey Jones nailed a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left in the third quarter to give CDO a 36-28 lead but Mountain View would go on a 13-2 run to finish the game out.
CDO went down 6-0 early and 13-9 after the first period but junior Alicia Vallejos hit a 3-pointer to put CDO up 16-15 with 3:50 left in the second quarter. McLaughlin hit a 3-pointer to tie things back up at 22-22 with 28.3 seconds left in the half but senior Brittany West connected on four straight free throws to put CDO up 26-22 heading into the fourth period.
It was another opportunity lost for CDO but the team is still in a good position to play in the Division II/Section I sectionals scheduled to begin Tuesday, February 5.
Jones scored 14 as did West. Vallejos added 6 and junior Sammy Nettling scored 4.
McLaughlin led all scorers with 17 points, Reece scored her 13 and senior Jessica Salaz added 5 for Mountain View.
Mountain View travels to Santa Rita (0-13) on Friday and CDO heads out to Catalina Foothills (9-5).
