Soccer Brackets all set: 20 Southern Arizona teams are in

by on Jan. 25, 2013, under Sports

Sabino will have to play without the services of senior standouts Willow Cozzens and Shannon Shields in post season play. Shields fractured her spine earlier in the season and Cozzens (Pictured above) tore an ACL on Thursday. Andy Morales Photo.

Sahuaro, Catalina Foothills and Palo Verde will host two double-header first-round matches on the girl’s side on Tuesday night and Salpointe will do the same on Wednesday night for the boys.

Despite winning six of its last seven games, the Buena girls fell out of the top 16 and did not make the D-I playoffs. It was probably their tie with Salpointe on January 15 that cost them a spot.

The Mountain View girls made it but fell out of the top four and will have to travel across town to play Chandler in a D-I match.

It appears Sahuaro’s late-season win over Catalina Foothills kept them at the top of the D-II ranks and they will host their first match. All of the top four seeds in all divisions will play at 7 pm unfortunately.

Catalina Foothills will still host and Ironwood Ridge will be playing in that playoff pod at Foothills in the first game.

Sahuarita stayed in the top 8 so they get to play close to home at Palo Verde. Marana and Sabino must travel to the Phoenix area for their games.

Sabino suffered another setback to their already depleted roster. Senior Willow Cozzens suffered a torn ACL late in their close match against Catalina Foothills on Thursday night. This will be the second torn ACL for Cozzens who was only able to come back to the sport after five months of intense physical therapy.

The Sabercats lost senior standout Shannon Shields earlier in the year to a fractured lower back.

The Palo Verde girls are back with a two seed and will host but Catalina, Safford and Push Ridge must travel in D-III action.

The Rincon boys held on and Tucson squeaked in the D-I playoffs as the last seed. In fact, Desert View took the 15 seed so all three Tucson teams took the last three playoff spots.

The Salpointe boys will host the late D-II match. Nogales tumbled out of contention after they lost to Desert View which turned out to be good news for the Catalina Foothills boys who got in as the last seed over CDO by .2225 points.

Douglas will host Amphi in D-III action while Palo Verde will plat Salpointe in the first match of that double header. Thatcher plays the top seeded Coronado team.
