Local volleyball club team takes third at MLK Kickoff Classic

The VBC Dinamo 16U team finished in third place at the Fiesta MLK Kickoff Classic 16 Open Division held last weekend in Phoenix.

The team went undefeated (7-0) through two days of group play and then beat Laguna Beach 2-0 to advance to the winners bracket semifinal against the top rated 16 and under team in Southern California T-Street losing in the tie-break (17-25, 25-22, 15-8) to move ahead to the finals.

This is the fifth top five finish for this group in national competitions dating back to 2011. “The team has a good chance to be ranked among the country’s elite top teams when the next poll comes out,” said club owner Andre Christopher Gonzalez via email.

The team is comprised of Courtney Linaker (Ironwood Ridge), Karissa Carney (Ironwood Ridge), Carissa Henning (Sabino), Glen Brumm (CDO), Jordan Weatherless (Ironwood Ridge), Annie Coyle, Hannah Gerard (CDO), McKenna McCabe (Ironwood Ridge), Brookley Mathews, and Riley Seymour.

The team is coached by Salpointe Alum Will Russell, Mackenzie Quick and Pima Head coach Dan Bithell.
