Playoff day in Tucson: Six venues & 72 milesby Andy Morales on Feb. 02, 2013, under Sports
Six playoff venues and 72 miles. Throw in a stop to take some high school senior photos and a detour to pick up some tape for my daughter’s bat, and the day took exactly seven hours to complete.
As you may recall, I tried to do the same thing last spring for baseball and softball playoffs but I ran into some difficulty and could not complete the task. This time, however, it was smooth sailing.
9:15 am: Left my home for a trip across town to take senior photos for Tucson High softball standout Araselly Vargas at Pinnacle Peak scheduled for 10 am.
Had a great time and took some awesome shots of Ari. You can see samples of my work on my smugmug page linked above.
11:35 am: Arrived at Sabino for the Division III/Section III wrestling tournament. Found a parking spot right away and was able to get some shots before they had a break in the action. Missed seeing a couple of my cousins wrestle but I was able to chat and sneak out after a half an hour.
12:25 pm: Palo Verde for soccer.
I arrived just before half and saw that the Palo Verde girls were losing to Cactus 2-0. Taylor Kruse scored on a PK in the second half and then Alexis Veney tied it on a wild sequence that involved four headers in the mixer. Unfortunately, Cactus scored on a breakaway with about 3 minutes left in the match for the win.
The Palo Verde and Amphi boys came up next and Palo Verde won on PKs to advance to the D-III semifinal round. The Arizona Daily Star’s Daniel Gaona was there. Catch all the highlights from that match from him Sunday morning.
1:58 pm: Sahuaro for soccer.
Arrived just as the National Anthem was being played for a girl’s D-II match between Sahuarita and Sahuaro. It’s a good thing I did because Anyssa Dagnino scored in the first 10 seconds to put Sahuaro up early.
I was shocked to find out later that Sahuarita won the match in PKs. Sahuarita earns a spot in the semifinal round.
2:33 pm: Arrived at Catalina Foothills for soccer.
The other local D-II girl’s match featured Ironwood Ridge at Catalina Foothills. Foothills survived (3-0) and will play in the other semifinal on the other half of the bracket away from Sahuarita. The Star was here also…
2:50 pm: Heading to Salpointe, I remembered I needed to buy some green tape for my daughter’s softball bat so I detoured to Baum’s on Oracle and ran into Pusch Ridge standout pitcher Donny Perdue and his mom. Perdue was one of my kindergarten students some 12 years or so ago.
3:20 pm: Arrived at Salpointe for soccer.
Salpointe (4 seed) destroyed Verrado (5 seed) 6-0. I got there with 17 minutes left and was able to catch Colin O’Brien score on the left wing. The Lancers move on to the D-II semifinals.
3:45 pm: Arrived at Flowing Wells for wrestling.
The D-II/Section II Sectionals were winding down and Ironwood Ridge came away with the win.
4:20 pm: Back home.
