Basketball sectionals all set: 39 Southern Arizona teams to take the court
by Andy Morales on Feb. 03, 2013, under SportsHere’s a breakdown of what to expect:
The top four teams at each sectional will earn an automatic bid to the state playoffs. That means, win one game at sectionals and you are in – even if you are not in the top 24 of your division. It can be a blessing or a punishment to qualify for sectionals of you are on the edge of making the state playoffs. Since 12 spots will be earned at sectionals, the final 12 spots will come from seeding points.
And, since seeding points can still be earned (or lost) at sectionals, there can still be some shifting on which 24 tams will make it to state or which eight teams will get a first-round bye or which 16 teams will get to host.
For Division I girls, Buena is sitting at 8 and Mountain View at 10. Mountain View can work their way into a first-round bye if they win and Buena loses at sectionals. Ironwood Ridge has a long shot of sneaking into the top 24 if the computers punish Section I teams Kofa and Cibola for losses at their sectional.
D-II power Flowing Wells is at 9 and can get into the top eight if they win at sectionals. Sabino qualified for sectionals but has not qualified for state. They win at sectionals and they are in and will bump someone else out. The illness to Alexa Arndt made things a bit difficult for them. Douglas probably wishes they didn’t qualify for sectionals because, if they lose, they are probably out of their state spot.
Nothing much can happen at D-III as a result of sectionals but D-IV will be all about seeding position for St. Gregory, Duncan and Desert Christian.
For the boys, Cienega and Buena might be sweating it out if they lose at the D-I sectionals but that is what Sunnyside is hoping for since they are on the edge of making the state playoffs.
Sahuaro and Salpointe could switch positions depending on what happens in the first game at the D-II sectionals. As of now, Salpointe has a bye at state and Sahuaro is knocking on the door.
The Empire boys can drop out of the D-III state playoffs if they lose. It will be tricky since they are playing the top seed.
The St. Gregory boys will be trying to get into the top eight in D-IV play.
