Girls Soccer: Catalina Foothills to play for another state championship

by on Feb. 06, 2013, under Sports

According to a report from Odeen Domingo of The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com, Catalina Foothills beat Notre Dame 1-0 on a “strange goal.”

Domingo wrote:

“With less than two minutes to go in the match, Notre Dame Prep goalkeeper Meredith Reinhardt caught Amber Measley’s looping shot near the goal line but collided in mid-air with Catalina Foothills player Aleah Strength, who jumped to try to head the ball. Reinhardt was forced to land and stumbled behind the goal line with the ball, which slipped out of her hand.

It was ruled a goal.”

It was indeed, strange. I have never seen a play like that.

No foul was called so Foothills moves on to play Apollo in the Division II championship match scheduled for 10:30 am on Saturday at Gilbert Campo Verde High School.

Apollo beat Sahuarita 2-0 on two goals scored late in the second half.

The Palo Verde boys lost their D-II semifinal match against Cortez. the Salpointe boys play on Thursday.
