Wrestling Championships

Sunnyside’s dominance continues with another state championship at the highest level and second-year coach Anthony Leon led the Blue Devils to their 30th state title in 35 years.

The only years they “misfired” were 1980 (2nd place), 1989 (2nd place), 1995 (2nd place), 1997 (2nd place) and 2012. Sunnyside also came in second in 1977.

Individual champions were Juaqin Olivas (113), William Olivas (126) and Gabriel Gonzales (195).

Ironwood Ridge coach Tim Berrier moved into an exclusive club of coaches with three titles after his Nighthawk squad won the D-II title for the third year in a row. Only six coaches from Southern Arizona have won more championships than Berrier.

It is the school’s 17th team championship from any team sport since 2007 and the second of this school year after The Ridge captured their first football championship last fall.

Ironwood Ridge champions are: Tate Sandifer (138), Troy Taylor (145), Matt Filbert (152) and Scott Simmons (195).

The other Southern Arizona champions are: Bailey Janis of Mountain View (113), TJ Gudeman of Cienega (160) and Kyle Jividen of Sahuaro (285)
