Salpointe has two great seniors at the top of their stat sheet when one talks about goal scoring. Thomas Hope has an incredible 28 goals and Colin O’Brien had 18 heading into the Lancer’s state final against Glendale Apollo Saturday afternoon.
But right behind the two senior leaders is sophomore Gavino Carranza. At 17 goals, only three other sophomores in the state have scored more this year and none from Southern Arizona have seen their shots hit the net as much as Carranza has.
The midfielder added to his total with a shot he took at full speed while racing down the left sideline that flew into the upper right corner of the goal in the 47th minute.
O’Brien ended his senior season with 19 goals after he scored on a PK from 25 yards out in the 77th minute to put the game away 2-0.
Besides Hope and O’Brien, seniors Arturo Vega (14 goals), Sergio Anaya (6), Christian Garcia (2), Jacob Hallum (2), Jesus Fernandez (1), Gaston Carranza, Jeff Gautreau and Nick Munsen have all ended their careers by winning back-to-back state titles.
Weber loses 10 seniors who accounted for 72 of his team’s 124 goals (58%). There is no doubt that will be a lot to overcome next year but he still has plenty of firepower remaining with Gavino Carranza, Luis Castro and Will Martin returning.
Salpointe outscored their opponents 20-1 in their four postseason matches.
