Former Salpointe tennis champion Maggie McGeorge leads a Southern Arizona reunion of former local standouts playing this weekend in Tucsonby Andy Morales on Feb. 14, 2013, under Sports
It’s a homecoming weekend of sorts for former Southern Arizona high school standouts. We have the former softball all-stars playing over at Lincoln Park in the Division II Leadoff Classic, several former softball players over at the University of Arizona for the Hillenbrand Invitational, a major local basketball talent that got away, two tennis events with an important piece of a local tennis dynasty playing against Arizona for Santa Clara.
Division II Leadoff Classic: February 15-17
Former Canyon del Oro softball stars Janelle Christman, Kayla Henry and Kiley Raica, will be playing for Grand Canyon at the D-II Classic as will Mercedes Garcia (Rincon) and Jessica Sipe (Mountain View). Garcia and Sipe play for Western Texas A&M.
Hillenbrand Invitational: February 15-17
Drake will return to the Invite but local standouts Torey Craddock and Rose Magaddino graduated last year. Both left an impact on the Bulldogs. Craddock left as a First Team All-Conference selection and finished her career with 100 runs scored (6th in school history). Magaddino tied for third with a .997 fielding percentage and made the All-Tournament Team.
Southern Utah will bring former Buena standout Ariel Morbeck. Morbeck is a senior.
Sammi Noland returns as the only All-America catcher in Nebraska history. Noland won three state championship at CDO before moving on to play for Nebraska this year. Her former prep teammate Mattie Fowler started every game as a freshman for Nebraska last year.
Senior Kenzie Fowler (CDO) and junior Estela Piñon (Sunnyside) are on Arizona’s roster.
Colorado at Arizona Women’s Basketball: February 15
Marana graduate Jamee Swan returns to Tucson as a former top 40 player prospect and the eighth best forward in the nation. As a freshman, Swan has played in every game this year for the Buffaloes and is averaging almost 5 points a game and 4 rebounds.
Rumor has it almost 200 local fans have purchased tickets to watch her play on Friday night.
Men’s Tennis: Reffkin Tennis Center: February 16-17
Former Salpointe Lancer and current New Mexico tennis standout Mitch McDaniels returns to play against Arizona in a special event held at the Reffkin Tennis Center on Saturday.
Freshman Matt Dunn (Salpointe) and sophomore Carlos Bermudez (Palo Verde) are on Arizona’s roster.
Women’s Tennis vs. Santa Clara: February 16
Robin and Linda McGeorge have built a tennis dynasty in their own home with their children Tommy, Kate, Maggie and Maeve winning several state championships at Salpointe.
Tommy McGeorge won a state doubles title as a freshman at Salpointe (2003) and a singles title as a junior (2005) before moving on to Iowa where he finished in fifth place for his doubles winning percentage.
Kate McGeorge won two state doubles titles with her younger sister Maggie McGeorge in 2006 and 2007 and then Maggie went on to win another one the following year before moving over to play for Santa Clara.
Now a senior for the Broncos, Maggie will make an appearance against Arizona on Saturday.
If you include current Salpointe senior standout Maeve McGeorge, the siblings have won a collective nine team championships to go along with their individual medals. If you are keeping track, that would bring in the family championship haul to somewhere around 19 when accounting for overlapping careers.
But, that total would be off by one because their father Robin McGeorge won a doubles in title for Sabino back in 1975.
Find me another family from Southern Arizona with 20 state championships to their name….
