2013 Wrestling All-Stars: Bailey Janis & Kyle Jividen earn top honors

by on Feb. 20, 2013, under Sports

Here they are. I have recognized 168 wrestlers from Southern Arizona including the Upper and Lower Weight Class winners, three All-Southern Arizona teams and three teams for each of the four divisions.

Let’s quickly go over the coaches of the year, Anthony Leon of Sunnyside and Tim Berrier of Ironwood Ridge.

Sunnyside’s 33-24 win over Ironwood Ridge on January 23, coupled with their win over the Nighthawks at the Flowing Wells Invite a few days earlier, would seem to tip the scales in favor of second-year Blue Devil coach Leon over Berrier of The Ridge.

If you have to go with one coach then the pick should be Leon hands down but that would take away from the accomplishment Berrier completed at Division II. Even though each year should stand alone, Berrier picked up his third championship in a row. Only six coaches have won more from Southern Arizona.

The Lower and Upper Class winners will be the first to have “Grayson Weeks” attached to their accomplishment. The Empire quarterback and wrestler lost his life this year in an automobile accident and his mother Jennifer has personally approved of the award given in his name.

Of the 17 state champions from Southern Arizona, only two went undefeated according to official AIA records. Bailey Janis of Mountain View went 54-0 in the 113-pound class and Kyle Jividen of Sahuaro went 43-0 in the 285-pound division.

They were the easy choices, although arguments can be made for several of the other champions. It’s hard, however, to argue against a wrestler who didn’t lose.

Right or wrong, this is probably the most extensive list you will see in the state beyond just a grouping in “honorable mention.”
