Ironwood Ridge captures Cowboy Up Baseball Classic in 11 innings over Mountain Viewby Andy Morales on Feb. 23, 2013, under Sports
Mountain View needed 9 innings to defeat Salpointe 12-11 in a semifinal game of the Cowboy Up Classic on Saturday morning but they would need to play 11 more to decide the championship against Ironwood Ridge.
Sahuaro and Ironwood Ridge played in the other semifinal. That game went back and forth until Ironwood Ridge pulled away in the sixth inning to win 11-5.
Sahuaro took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Alex Verdugo walked, stole second base, stole third base and then ran home on a wild pitch. Ironwood Ridge scored one in the bottom of the second inning to tie it back up on a groundout RBI by Kevin Sherwood to bring in Frankie Ortiz.
Sahuaro went back up 2-1 in the third but Ironwood Ridge scored two in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead at 3-2
Both teams scored again in the fourth but Ironwood Ridge scored two in the bottom of the fifth and then five more in the sixth with two outs. Frankie Silva knocked in two runs for Sahuaro in the top of the seventh but it wasn’t enough.
Jake Matthews went 4-4 with a triple, two doubles and a single. Matthew’s triple to left field hit the warning track and his double to center almost hit the centerfield fence.
Salpointe fell behind 9-3 before making a comeback and Mountain View won on a walk-off walk to win the their semifinal game.
Mountain View went on to score three runs in the first inning of the championship game and then one more in the second. Down 4-0, Ironwood Ridge exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second inning on a lead-off triple by Devon Harrison, a sacrifice fly by Kurt Bailey, back-to-back walks issued to Ortiz and Trey Stine, a double by Jake Dunn, a triple by Andrew Killom and an RBI by Travis Chavez.
Mountain View plated three more to retake the lead in the top of the fifth on a double by Morgan Flores, a hit by Brandon Hyatt, a walk by Miko Simental an RBI by Sam Garcia and a single by Colton Wheeler.
Ryan Windish hit a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep Ironwood Ridge alive and then Harrison walked one out later to put the tying runs on base. Bailey came up big again and hit a triple down the right field line to tie the game but he remained stranded at third base.
Mountain View loaded the bases in the top of the 10th with two outs but they couldn’t get the next hit and Ironwood Ridge was held to just one hit over their next 10 batters until Killom walked to lead off the bottom of the 11th.
Killom took second base without a throw and then Windish brought him in on a double to right field for the winning run.
