Empire pitcher Kelsey Smith named National Player of the Week & Diamond Notes
by Andy Morales on Feb. 27, 2013, under SportsEmpire junior pitcher Kelsey Smith was named Max Preps/NFCA National High School Player of the Week for the West Region.
According to MaxPreps, “Smith hit .778 (14-for-18) with nine runs scored, six doubles, four HR’s and 17 RBIs, while also going 2-1 from the circle with 14 strikeouts over 11 innings of effort. She registered at least one hit in all seven contests during the week with her best game coming during a 10-1 (6 inn.) rout of Boulder Creek (AZ), going 3-for-3 with three tallies, a doubles, two HR’s and four RBIs.”
Former Flowing Wells head baseball coach David Landrith is now an assistant coach at Canyon del Oro under head coach Steve Ambuehl.
Ambuehl was Landrith’s assistant at Flowing Wells before moving over to CDO last year. Landrith is a former All-PAC 10 catcher at Arizona and is entering his 28th year of coaching. Landrith coached Flowing Wells to the state championship game in 1993. This is Landrith’s second stint as an assistant at CDO.
Desert Christian head baseball coach Grant Hopkins got an added boost in his dugout with the addition of former Sabino and CDO coach Mike Hanson and his son Ryan. Mike has been a coach for over 20 years and Ryan played on Sabino’s 1997 championship team.
Sahuaro softball pitcher Gina Snyder was selected to pitch in the TCS Colorado Sparkler National All-Star Game this coming summer. Snyder is a junior and is getting attention from academic institutions such as Harvard and George Washington University.
