CDO hits three homers to beat Sabino 10-4by Andy Morales on Mar. 01, 2013, under Sports
The last time Sabino and Canyon del Oro played each other was for a shot at the semifinal round of the 2012 Division II state playoffs.
A late error by Sabino and a 2-RBI double by Makenzie Sullivan in the bottom of the sixth inning was all CDO needed for the 7-5 win. Sabino left 12 runners on base in that game…
The 2013 rematch took place at CDO on Friday with Sabino taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three unearned runs. Kelsey Jenkins singled and came home on a three-base error that placed Haley Schieb on third base with no outs.
Alexis Alfonso induced a couple of outs to keep Schieb at third but Ashlen Vega and Ashlee Skillings walked to load the bases. Shelby Diffenderfer came up and singled to right field to bring in Schieb and Vega. Madi Draper followed with an infield hit to reload the bases but Alfonso struck out the next batter to end the threat.
CDO was able to tie things up in the bottom of the first thanks to a 2-run homerun by Niki Gonzalez that brought in her and lead-off batter Jordyn Binnion.
Skillings picked up the second out from the circle but Sammy Nettling reached on an infield hit and Shelby Hotchkiss and Heather Knight walked to load the bases. Monique Castillo drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Nettling.
Skillings ended the inning with a strikeout.
Binnion started things off again in the bottom of the second inning with a single and Maggie Morales sacrificed her over to second base. Skillings got a fly ball for the second out but Sullivan struck again and delivered a 2-run homer to give CDO a 5-3 lead.
Sabino got a run back in the top of the third on a single by Vega and two back-to-back bunts by Skillings and Diffenderfer to load the bases with no outs.
Draper brought in Vega on a groundout but a line-drive double play by Castillo at short ended Sabino’s threat.
Alfonso only allowed two more hits as Sabino went 2 for 14 the rest of the way with five of those being strikeouts. Meanwhile, Knight doubled to lead off the bottom of the third and scored on a two-out triple by Binnion. Binnion scored on a error on the play to give CDO a 7-4 lead.
Knight picked up a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-4 and then CDO added two more runs on errors in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 10-4 final.
Jenkins went 2-3 and Diffenderfer went 2-3 with 2 RBIs for Sabino. Binnion went 3-4 with a triple, Gonzalez hit a 2-run homerun, Sullivan hit a 2-run homerun, Knight hit a homerun and a double and Castillo hit a double for CDO.
Alfonso picked up the win with one earned run, 8 hits and 6 strikeouts.
