Desert View pitcher Odalis Orduño held the first three Marana batters in check to start off the championship game of the 20th Badger Classic Saturday evening but the Tigers came alive in the top of the second inning.

Down 2-0 on a couple of walks, an error and an RBI double by Orduño in the bottom of the first inning, Marana was in danger of losing to Desert View for the second time in the invitational held at Cherry Field but 14 batters came up for Marana in the top of the second inning to help bring in nine runs.

The inning was highlighted by a grand slam by Hailey Oesterling and nine hits total with freshman outfielder Maddy Vieux collecting two hits in the inning.

“Everyone was getting on by getting singles and that’s what I was trying to do,” explained Oesterling. “I knew if we just hit our spots we would get on but I was really excited when I crossed first base and everyone was yelling. I knew it was a grad slam.”

The grand slam was a first for Oesterling and it became part of what head coach George Corona calls the “scrappy play” he’s been witnessing from his team lately.

“We’ve had some timely hits and have been hitting pretty well,” said Corona but we have also been pitching well and have been playing good defense.”

Junior pitcher Casey Cadenhead gave up two walks to start the game and the double to Orduño but she turned it up a notch from there and scattered three hits the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Marana added four unearned runs in the top of the third inning to put the game out of reach.

Besides Orduño’s double, Maya Garcia and Reese Ramirez reached safely on singles and Gabriela Trejo picked up a double for Desert View.

Hannah McCoy added a 2-RBI double for Marana, Jordan Wengert went 2-4 and Cadenhead had a 2-RBI single. Alex Gehr, Sierra Cuestas, Katelynn Miller and Mason Howard also picked up hits in the game.

Ramirez moved over from third base to pitch for Orduño in the top of the third inning. Ramirez gave up no earned runs in relief.
