CDO over Buena 16-14 to win Lancer Baseball Classicby Andy Morales on Mar. 26, 2013, under Sports
March 18-22: Reid Park Annex
Canyon del Oro (11-4) swept through the Lancer Baseball Classic last week to claim the title with a 16-14 win over Buena (8-7). Buena made it through the tourney with upset wins over Salpointe Catholic and Sunnyside to get to the final against CDO.
With 31 hits between the two teams, it was easy to see that pitching had taken its toll with the long tournament schedule.
Buena jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first but CDO came back and scored three in the bottom half of the inning. CDO took a 5-4 lead after three innings but Buena exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth and it looked like Buena was primed for another upset win up 10-5 but CDO had other plans.
CDO responded with six runs if their own to retake the lead and then four more in the bottom of the fifth to jump out to their biggest lead of 15-10.
Buena added four more runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead down to 15-14 but sophomore Erick Migueles hit a huge home run in the major-league field in the bottom of the sixth to put CDO up 16-14. Sophomore ace Gabe Benavides came in to pitch and he shut down Buena in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.
Senior Ryan Bronson went 4-5 with 4 RBIs on the strength of 2 doubles and he was awarded a bat and was named the MVP of the tournament.
Nick Ames had a double, Migueles went 3-4 with the home run, Jared Dubois went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and Brandon Burke went 2-5 with a double to lead CDO.
Jacob DeAnda went 3-5 with two doubles and a triple to go along with 5 RBIs to lead Buena. Matthew Duce went 3-5 with a triple, Michael Osterman went 2-5 and Marcos Aguilar went 2-2 with an RBI. Aaron Ronquillo hit a double as did Patrick Penrod.
Ironwood Ridge (13-2) suffered their first two losses of the year at the Lancer Classic and the will meet up with CDO on Wednesday, March 27 and then again at home on April 4.
