Softball: Pima sweeps Central to move into playoff contentionby Andy Morales on Apr. 13, 2013, under Sports
Pima Community College entered their Saturday doubleheader against Central Arizona on an eight-game win streak as part of their run that included winning 15 of their last 17 games and, by the time CAC left Tucson, the win streak was extended to 10.
Central Arizona was ranked third in the nation coming in but their two losses lifted the Aztecs record to 36-16 overall and 28-12 in conference play. Leading the way for the Aztecs were pitcher Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita), outfielder Victoria Mariscal (Douglas) and shortstop Aubre Carpenter (Sabino).
Alvarez held Central to five hits in the opening game while striking out five while Carpenter went 3-3 with two RBIs and Mariscal hit a home run and collected three RBIs.
Alvarez was in complete control to start the first game by retiring five of the first six batters she faced, including three of her strikeouts, while Pima went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning on a home run from Mariscal to score herself and Carpenter.
Pima scored four more runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Alejandra Ortiz (Tucson High) to score Gemma Contreras (Salpointe) and an RBI double from Noelle Medina (San Manuel) that scored Alvarez.
Carpenter blasted a shot past the second baseman to score Shawna Comeaux (Sabino) and Medina.
Ortiz led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and then Medina was walked with one out. Carpenter singled and the speedy Stephanie Ramirez (Benson) came in to run for Medina because she represented the mercy rule winning run at second base.
Mariscal was walked with bases loaded to score Ortiz and then Danielle Stensby (Buena) hit an infield single to score Ramirez from third base for the 8-0 win.
In the second game, the Aztecs trailed 1-0 in the fourth inning when Medina came up with base loaded and hit a 2-run RBI single to give Pima the lead for good. Carpenter followed and on the first pitch, hit an RBI single to score Comeaux for the 3-1 victory.
Alvarez (19-11) won both games. Carpenter has verballed to Indiana State.
