Boys Volleyball: Salpointe drops match to top seed in 3 setsby Andy Morales on May. 07, 2013, under Sports
QUARTERFINALS: Tuesday, May 7
8 Salpointe lost to 1 Desert Vista, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22)
Salpointe became the first Southern Arizona team to reach the quarterfinal round since the AIA switched from two boy’s volleyball divisions to one. The Lancers were the top seed in the old 5A Conference in 2011 where they finished in second place.
Only four teams played in the second round last year and that number dropped to three this spring with Salpointe being one of them.
Boy’s volleyball has only been part of the championship series since 1995 and the Lancers have finished runner-up in 2001 and 2011. Tucson-area teams dominated D-II from 2006 to 2011 before the lower division was eliminated.
There was only one division from 1995 to 2005 and only Canyon del Oro was able to win a title from Southern Arizona in that time frame (1996).
