Pima softball wins again at Nationals with 4-0 shutoutby Andy Morales on May. 16, 2013, under Sports
The Pima Community College softball team (48-17), the No. 5 seed, advanced in the winner’s bracket of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament on Thursday after it shut out No. 4 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 4-0.
Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita) pitched a complete-game shutout giving up three hits with three strikeouts and one walk. She sat down the first nine hitters of the game and gave up two hits in the fourth inning. Northern Oklahoma loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but Alvarez struck out the next batter to end the game.
With one out in the sixth inning, the Aztecs extended its lead when Aubre Carpenter (Sabino) hit a double which was followed by a Victoria Mariscal (Douglas) two-run homer to centerfield that put the Aztecs up 4-0.
Pima got on the board in the fourth inning when Noelle Medina (San Manuel) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score Cynthia Pelayo (Vision), who had a leadoff walk to begin the inning. In the fifth inning, Mariscal reached on an error and advanced to second base.
Danielle Stensby (Buena) hit an RBI single to score Mariscal to make it 2-0. Stensby went 3 for 3 with an RBI for the game while Mariscal finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Aztecs will play No. 8 Wallace State (Alabama), who beat No. 1 seed Butler Community College 8-6, at 2:30 pm on Friday.
