Ironwood Ridge volleyball standout Kennedy Kurtz to play for Cal-State Sacramentoby Andy Morales on May. 17, 2013, under Sports
Ironwood Ridge senior-to-be Kennedy Kurtz was a First Team All-Southern Arizona selection for her play on the indoor courts but it will be her abilities on the sand that will help her get to the next level.
Kurtz verbally committed to California State University Sacramento on Thursday night to play both court and sand volleyball on a full-ride scholarship for what has to be a great birthday present.
“It’s a day for celebrating!” exclaimed her mother Noel Nixon Kurtz.
“My beautiful daughter, Kennedy, is 17 today! The pressure is now off as she goes into her senior year. We are so proud of her!”
Nixon Kurtz was a standout track and field athlete at the University of Arizona and she held the Arizona pentathlon record from 1990 to 2007. She also had the Arizona Heptathlon all-conference mark for 1991.
Kennedy Kurtz is also a standout track athlete at Ironwood Ridge and she finished in third place in the Division-II 300 meter hurdles and fourth place in the 100 meter hurdles at the state meet held last week.
She was also part of the Nighthawk’s 4×400 relay team that took the championship in 2011 and came in second this spring along with Piper Mali, Hailey Sawchuk and Melanie Zibrat.
Former Ironwood Ridge volleyball standout Michaela Christiaansen won a national team sand volleyball championship playing for Pepperdine last year.
