The Tucson Summer Pro League is in its second week at St. Gregory High School. This year, the league began to hold games for kids in the morning prior to the summer games.
50 kids spread over five teams are taking part and I was able to catch up on a couple of the games held Saturday.
Pascua outlasted West 38-27 and then North bested South 48-28.
Pascua and West played to a 13-13 tie in the first half with Julien Whetton pacing Pascua with seven points. Five players were able to score for West in the first half but they were unable to keep up with Pascua after the half.
Whetton went on to score six more and Ernesto Ochoa exploded for 11 points and Justin Alvarez poured in eight more to help Pascua pull away. West was led by Malik Rainge (7 points), Tory Ramirez (7) and Evan Nelson (6).
Ochoa led all scorers with 15, Whetton had 13 and Alvarez finished with eight.
North was able to sprint out to 22-14 lead in the first half over South and they held their lead in the second half with South playing them even from there.
Devin Stubblefield and Marcus McCauley scored six points each to help North build their early lead. South was led by Pablo Guittierez, who drained three 3-pointers in the second half to finish with 11 points, and Jupree Jordan scored eight.
McCauley and Mateo Daniels scored 10 points to lead North and Stubblefield and Joshua Sutherland added eight each.
The first game of the TSPL featured Nimbus and Pizza Hut with Nimbus winning that game 60-50.
Mike Walters poured in 17 points to help Nimbus to a 32-19 lead at the half. Walters went on to score a game-high 26 points to help keep Pizza Hut out of reach after they were able to cut the scored down to 50-45 with two minutes left in the game.
Stephan Oropeza added 13 for Nimbus and Mike Biancuzzo scored 17 to lead Pizza Hut. Alex Ross added 12 for Pizza Hut and Chris Johnson put in eight and Nic Olm scored seven.
