The game of baseball has officially been turned over to the boys and girls of summer with the first pitch of the Little League All-Star playoffs taking place today in parks all around town.
The Little League Division (also known as the Major Division) got underway at Kriegh Park in Oro Valley with Marana visiting Canyon del Oro. Although CDO eventually ran away with the game with a score of 18-0, play will continue for Marana in the Elimination Bracket.
Gavin Craddolph led things off for Marana with a single to centerfield but the team could only manage two more base runners the rest of the way and couldn’t keep up with CDO’s bats.
CDO scored a run in the bottom of the first, five more in the second and 12 in the bottom of the third for the four-inning victory. Lead-off batter Kiko Romero paced CDO with two doubles, two home runs and six RBIs.
In all, CDO collected five home runs and five doubles in the game. Besides Romero’s 4-4 game, Seth Nager went 2-4 with a home run and four RBIs; Assim Ahmad went 3-4 with a double; Romeo Reiff went 2-3 with a double and a home run and Simon Lytle went 2-3 with a double.
Brayden Benavides picked up a hit; Nathan Martinez hit an RBI single; Trey Cox hit; Connor Morrison hit a pinch-hit home run and Travis Higdon had an RBI single.
CDO moves on in the Winner’s Bracket and will play Frontier on Wednesday night at 5 pm at Kreigh Park and Marana will play the loser of that game on Friday at 5 pm at Kriegh park.
