District 8 covers the rest of Southern Arizona.
Sunnyside and San Xavier played in a best-of-three tournament to decide the District 12 Softball Juniors title over the last few days and San Xavier came out on top after each team combined for 90 runs in the series.
San Xavier beat Sunnyside 20-15 on Saturday night to take the first game but Sunnyside returned the favor with a 15-12 victory on Monday to tie up the championship series.
The final game took place Tuesday night at the Field of Dreams complex and San Xavier came back from 13-3 deficit to win the championship 15-13.
San Xavier scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning for the early lead Tuesday night but Sunnyside scored eight in the second and two more in the third to take a big lead. Brianna Gomez singled to lead off the bottom of the first for San Xavier and Ysela Murillo brought her home one out later.
Lucy Gonzales followed with another single to score Murillo to give San Xavier two early runs. Sunnyside exploded for eight runs in the top of the second inning thanks to five walks, a hit by Jacky Walldez, and a 2-RBI single from Tatyanna Duchene. Sunnyside added two more runs in the third after Amaya Turner got on with two outs and Duchene reached on an error.
Turner scored on the error and Duchene scored on the next play to put Sunnyside up 10-2. San Xavier got the two runs back in the bottom of the third thanks to a triple from Vega, and RBI from Brianna Encinas, a single from Gonzales and an RBI single from Daniella Contreras.
San Xavier cut into the lead again in the bottom of the fourth with three more runs. Rebecca Soto walked, Dezurae Monares-Leon reached on a bunt single and Gomez followed with an RBI single to score Soto.
Alison Wright brought in Monares-Leon and Murillo scored Gomez to make the score 10-7 Sunnyside.
Sunnyside scored three runs in the top of the fifth to go back up 13-7. Bella Phillips singled, Turner tripled and Duchene singled to score Turner. Duchene scored on a passed ball for the third run.
Down 13-7 in the bottom of the fifth, San Xavier needed a big inning and they got it with six runs to tie the game up 13-13. Viviana Cruz started things off with an infield hit, Cerena Castro followed with a single and Soto scored Cruz on a fielder’s choice. Gomez scored Castro and then Wright brought in Munoz and Gomez.
Murillo came up with a triple to score Wright and then Encinas scored Murillo for the 13th run.
Walldez singled to start the top of the sixth for Sunnyside and advanced to second on a stolen base and third on a passed ball with no outs but Wright induced two infield pop flies to end the threat.
Cruz singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and Castro followed with a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed, allowing Cruz to score and Castro to move to second base with no outs. Soto bunted Castro to third base and Brianna Velador sacrificed Castro home to put San Xavier up 15-13.
Sunnyside was unable to score in the seventh and San Xavier won the championship. Gonzales started the game for San Xavier but Wright came in and pitched from the second inning on for the win. Danesia Carpio went the distance for Sunnyside.
San Xavier moves on to the state tournament to be hosted by District 10 (Yavapai County). The Regional tournament will be held at Arthur Pack from August 1-8.
