14U Babe Ruth State Tournament
Kino Sports Complex: July 13-16
Hamilton went undefeated (5-0) to capture the 14U Babe Ruth state championship on Tuesday morning at the Kino Sports Complex. Hamilton’s 3-0 victory over Somerton gave them the right to represent Arizona at the Pacific Southwest Regional to be held in Surprise, Arizona from July 29-August 7.
Somerton (4-2) had lost to Hamilton on Sunday to fall into the Elimination Bracket where they knocked out Ironwood Ridge and the Tucson Swagger to get back to the championship game.
Ironwood Ridge finished 2-2 in the tournament and the Swagger (2-2) finished in third place.
The Huskies had defeated their opponents by a combined score of 45-5 in bracket play, including their 10-0 win over Somerton on Sunday. The championship game proved to be a little bit different.
Hamilton picked up a run in the top of the second to go up 1-0 after Tyler Stokes tripled to the fence and Ryan Turner singled him home with no outs. Somerton starting pitcher Damien Reinhart was able to get out of the inning with a double play but an error to start the top of the third helped bring in two more runs for Hamilton.
Thomas Cazares reached on an infield bobble and was able to score on a double by Zach Montero. Montero was able to score after Richard Ramsdell brought him in with two outs.
The two unearned runs gave Hamilton a 3-0 lead and Turner was able to hold Somerton to three hits through five innings to help maintain the lead. Somerton was able to load the bases on Turner in the bottom of the sixth with Kevin Avila and Gonzalo Badilla picking up hits and Oscar Ron earning a 2-out walk but Turner induced a ground ball to end the threat.
Hamilton was able to load the bases in the top of the seventh but they were unable to score. Also picking up hits for Hamilton in the game were Brayden Merritt and Seth Sas. Merritt was named the tournament MVP during the awards presentation after the game.
Victor Ruiz and Enrique Porchas, Jr. had singles for Somerton. Badilla was the only player in the game with two hits. The team from Somerton was awarded the Sportsmanship Award as a whole.
The 15U Pacific Southwest Regional begins on July 26 at the Kino Sports Complex. Ironwood Ridge and the Tucson Bobcats will represent Arizona and the field will include teams from Guam, Hawaii, California, Utah and Nevada. The winner will advance to the World Series in Virginia.
