Little League 10-11 Softball: July 15-19 (Arthur Pack)
Gilbert cruised to a 14-1 victory over Flagstaff on Friday night to capture the 10-11 state softball championship. Gilbert won all four of their games at the tournament held at the Arthur Park Complex in Marana by a combined score of 64-4. Besides a close 5-3 win over Thornydale on Wednesday, Flagstaff was the only other team to score against them.
Flagstaff went 3-2 after losing to Thornydale in the first round and battled back to make it to the championship game.
Mia Stankiewicz took to the circle for Gilbert and held Flagstaff to six hits and the one earned run in the second inning. Kaitlyn Snopek singled and Grace Vonesh brought her in for the lone run.
Stankiewicz’s brother Drew plays baseball for Arizona State, her sister Marisa will be a freshman softball player at ASU this fall and her father Andy Stankiewicz is a former major leaguer and current head coach at Grand Canyon.
“We are very proud and excited for her and for the entire team,” her father told me. “They got to the championship game last year and her coach Al (Vega) and his daughter Alexis did a great job getting them back here.”
Stankiewicz, Allison Hall, McKenna Prefach, Nikole Witting and Skye Shippy collected hits for Gilbert. Besides Snopek and Vonesh, Megan Swinney, Taylor Brown, Suzanne Walzer and Brooklyn Wong hit for Flagstaff.
“Some people think this is just girl’s softball,” added Andy Stankiewicz. “But these girls enjoy the game and to them it’s a passion.”
Thornydale Little League will host the Junior West Regional from August 1-8 at Arthur Pack. Teams from Montana, Nevada, California, Idaho, Alaska, Washington, Arizona and Oregon are slated to play.
