After 27 hours, baseball team from Guam arrives for Babe Ruth Regionalsby Andy Morales on Jul. 23, 2013, under Sports
Almost 9,000 miles, a 27-hour flight and a 2-hour drive is what it took to get 16 teenage boys and their coaches from Guam to Tucson on Sunday. Also making the long journey were several parents and siblings and most looked like they have adjusted to the time difference.
Team Guahan took off from Guam and flew to Honolulu, San Francisco, Houston and then Phoenix where they drove down to Tucson. The Houston connection added another 2,000 miles to their trip. Remarkably, no luggage or players were lost along the way.
For second baseman Cole Palomo, the trip was well worth it. Despite operating on a 7-hour time difference, his team is busy practicing at the Reid Park Annex. “I’m going to do my best,” said Palomo.
“One game at a time and hopefully make it to the World Series.”
Guam is part of the 13-15 Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth Regionals that will be held from July 27-31 at the Kino Baseball Complex. Teams from Hawaii, Utah, Nevada, California and Tucson will also be playing.
Even though the boys from Guam will be shopping, exploring and taking in a Diamondbacks game on Wednesday night, head coach Dave Cruz still has them knowing why they came to Tucson.
“We get up every morning for an early breakfast and then practice from 9 to 11:30 am,” explained Cruz. “We have team meetings every night before they hit the sack.”
Cruz went on to explain how young his team is with a few eighth graders on the roster, including his son John Anthony Cruz, but he feels the experience will help them prepare for future years when some of his players come back.
The team welcomes visitors from Guam to come out and watch practice at Reid Park or take in a few of their games this coming weekend at Kino.
