University of Arizona baseball coach Andy Lopez helps kick off Babe Ruth Regionalsby Andy Morales on Jul. 26, 2013, under Sports
Arizona baseball coach Andy Lopez gave the keynote speech of the Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest Regionals opening banquet Friday night to the 10 teams, coaches, families and guests gathered at the UA Student Union Ballroom.
Lopez made a point to tell the young players to pay attention to the details in life. He also reminded them that the NCAA has implemented a new rule that academics for college eligibility will begin during their freshman year in high school. In the past, only the junior and senior years were counted.
Because a high-level program like Arizona only has about 11 scholarship to give, many athletes must depend on academic scholarships to help fill the void left by a partial athletic ride. With 35 athletes on his baseball team, Lopez explained that the most he has given out recently to one athlete was 71% but many are at the minimum 25% range.
Teams from Guam, Hawaii, Utah, Nevada, California and Tucson will take part in the 13-15 Babe Ruth Regionals held at the Kino Sports Complex starting on Saturday.
