Dirtybirds & Kino-Bobcats win first two games at Babe Ruth Regionalsby Andy Morales on Jul. 28, 2013, under Sports
The Ironwood Ridge Dirtybirds and the Tucson Kino-Bobcats have taken an early lead at the Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth Regionals held at the Kino Sports Complex.
The Dirtybirds run-ruled Nevada and then outlasted Guam in the night game while Kino needed some 8th inning heroics to get past Vernal, Utah. Down 8-7, Matt Coyle tripled to right field to start the bottom of the 8th off and then scored on a fielder’s choice that was mishandled at the plate to tie the game.
Kino went on to load the bases and Marcus Mendez brought in Carlos Rico for the winning run.
The other close game of the night came between Kailua, Hawaii and Taylorsville, Utah. Taylorsville took a 14-11 lead in the top of the 7th only to have Hawaii come back and tied the game on a delayed steal with runners on first and third.
Hawaii went on to win in the bottom of the 8th after Brendan Odo scored Dustin Imanaka from second base.
NOTES: Taylorsville is coached by former Bradshaw Mountain standout Jake Brown. Brown went on to play at Iowa State and then Texas Tech after Iowa State dropped their baseball program in 2001.
Brown’s younger brother is former Boston Red Sox catcher Dusty Brown. Dusty Brown has the distinction of being the only catcher to pitch for Boston. He pitched against the Toronto Blue Jays a day after the Red Sox clinched the 2009 American League Wild Card. His first major league hit was a home run over the Green Monster that October.
Brown went on to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas Rangers minor league organizations. He is now a free agent.
