Day 2 recap of the Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth Regionalsby Andy Morales on Jul. 29, 2013, under Sports
Westchester, California and Tri Valley, California ran the table on Sunday and finished day two of the Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth Regionals with a perfect 3-0 record.
Westchester beat Taylorsville, Utah before knocking off the Tucson Kino-Bobcats 16-8 and Tri Valley beat Guam and then the Ironwood Ridge Dirtybirds 5-3 in the late game.
Kino’s loss dropped them to 3-1 in Pool A and they, along with Westchester, have qualified for the semifinal round as long as Westchester defeats Hawaii or Hawaii gives up more runs than the Bobcats. The Dirtybirds also fell to 3-1 but they also qualified for a trip to the semifinals Tuesday night at the Kino Sports Complex along with Tri Valley.
There is still plenty of great games scheduled for Monday night with the two teams from Utah battling it out (Taylorsville and Vernal); Hanford, California attempting to even their record with a win against Guam; Nevada attempting to knock off Tri Valley along with the Hawaii/Westchester game.
Westchester outfielder Matthew Kanfer has gone 6-11 for the tournament but his streak of good fortune began long ago when a guy by the name of Mike Perryman coached him in Little League.
Perryman played high school ball at Mira Costa before moving on to play at Cal State Dominguez Hills. If those two schools sound familiar then they should because University of Arizona head coach Andy Lopez coached Perryman for four years in high school and then for four years in college.
Legend has it that Perryman would tell stories about Lopez to his players about sportsmanship and how to play the game correctly and Kanfer remembered those lessons. Kanfer got to meet Lopez at the opening banquet of the regional on Friday night and the two connected.
Kanfer’s mom, Gina Carillo, told me that Perryman is her son’s mentor just like Lopez was Perryman’s. The game of baseball is full of second chances and things always find a way to come full circle.
Kanfer’s father, Mike Kanfer, won an Oscar for visual effects on the Titanic movie, his aunt is former tennis standout and current sportscaster Mary Carillo and his uncle is producer and author Charlie Carillo.
