Ironwood Ridge & Tucson-Kino Bobcats make it to the semifinal round of the Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth Regionalsby Andy Morales on Jul. 29, 2013, under Sports
Tri Valley, California was the only undefeated team during pool play at the Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth Regionals held at the Kino Sports Complex. The Northern California representative only gave up four runs to earn a top seed.
The Tucson/Kino Bobcats finished with a 3-1 record and will take on Tri Valley in a semifinal game on Tuesday night at 7 pm. The other semifinal game will feature Westchester, California (3-1) against the Ironwood Ridge Dirtybirds (3-1). That other semifinal will also be played at 7 pm at the Kino Sports Complex.
The two winners will face off Wednesday night at 7 pm in the main Kino Memorial Stadium for a shot at the 13-15 Babe Ruth World Series to be held in Virginia.
Karter Pope took the mound for Vernal, Utah at the Pacific Southwest Babe Ruth Regionals early Monday evening and he did so without his father and coach, Kam Pope, in the dugout.
Karter’s grandfather Jerry Kent Pope passed away on July 2 and Kam had to stay behind in Utah to help run the family business (7-11 Ranch Restaurant). Jerry was an Arizona native who was born in Mesa in 1945 before moving to Utah. He left behind a wife (Connie), son and daughter, and five grandchildren.
According to Karter’s mom Jennifer, Jerry was always at all of Karter’s sporting events and he enjoyed activities with all of his grandchildren – from fishing to golfing to everything in between.
Karter’s teammates honored his late grandfather by wearing a patch on their uniforms with Jerry’s initials. Every player went to bat with the initials “JKP” on their chest.
The other team from Utah (Taylorsville) attended the Tucson Padres game late Monday night to watch their hometown Salt Lake Bees play. The boys were good sports and agreed to do the chicken dance on top of the Salt Lake dugout during the game.
