September 6-7: Mike Jacobs Sports Park
35 local teams took part in the Patriots Day Salute fastpitch tournament this past weekend in Marana at the Mike Jacobs Sports Park. Teams were playing in five divisions with AZ Elite and AZ Cats 2000 playing for the 16U championship and the Shockwave and Suncats playing for the 18U title.
AZ Elite beat the AZ Cats 4-1 and the Suncats got past the Shockwave 4-2. The 18U game was highlighted by the play of Suncat designated player Rose Jaramillo.
Jaramillo is sophomore at Glendale Kellis. MaxPreps named Jaramillo to their Underclass All-American team after her freshman season at Kellis (.474, 67 RBIs and 9 home runs).
The Glendale power hitter made the trip down to play for the Tucson-based Suncats and she hit a towering home run that flew over the 300 foot fence in left field in the final game. College, high school and youth fences usually run between 200 and 220 feet while men’s slow pitch plays off of the 300 foot fence.
Other players of note named to the MaxPreps All-Star list includes Empire’s Kelsey Smith and future Arizona Wildcat pitcher Tamara “T” Statman (Scottsdale Horizon).
Former Canyon del Oro and Drake standout catcher Rose Magaddino is an assistant coach for the AZ Cats 99 team and former University of Arizona standout Brigette Del Ponte assists with the Suncats. Former Catalina Foothills/Pima/UNC Greensboro standout Aubrey Baldwin is also an assistant coach for the Suncats.
The next tournament will take place September 21-22.
