Immaculate Heart over Tohono O’odham 3-0 (28-26, 25-15, 27-25)by Andy Morales on Sep. 18, 2013, under Sports
Down 7-12 to Tohono O’odham in the first set Wednesday night, the Lady Knights of Immaculate Heart turned to their serve to get them back in the game. Nicole Delatorre responded with a couple of aces through four service points and the set was all tied at 13-13.
Relanda Antone led the Lady Eagles back to a four point spread but Immaculate Heart battled back once again to tie it up at 20-20. The Lady Knights were flirting with taking the lead but they had difficulty finding the next point and Tohono O’odham went back up 24-22.
“We kept our energy up,” said sophomore Amity Brown. “We fought and, with the help of everyone, we did it.”
A kill by Meredith Ethridge was followed by an ace from Laura Aroz and the set was tied up again at 24-24. Immaculate Heart lost a point to go down again but Brown blocked to tie it up and the lead was finally theirs after Tohono O’odham made an error.
Brown served an ace and the comeback was complete, 28-26.
Brown finished the night with 14 kills with most of them coming in the second set where the Knights took control early to take it 25-15. Like most “small school” athletes, Brown is called upon to play multiple sports.
Besides volleyball, there is basketball, track and tennis with swimming during her free time but her main focus has been her teammates. “I love my team,” she explained.
“We all play together and never get down. Whenever there is a mistake we shake it off and keep going.”
The Knights had to do a lot of “shaking things off” in the third set after they fell behind 12-6. Delatorre put in a couple more aces and Brown put down three kills during a 9-3 run to tie the set up at 15-15.
But, once again, Tohono O’odham built their lead again. This time Dominique Cleveland provided the park with a couple of aces of her own and the Lady Eagles were back in charge, 22-17 and then 24-20.
The Knights turned it on again.
Delatorre scored on an Aroz assist and then Tohono O’odham couldn’t get the ball over to cut the lead down to 24-22. Aroz assisted Ethridge and Delatorre again and the set was tied up 24-24.
A net violation gave the lead back to the Lady Eagles but Ethridge put down another point and then Brown slammed down a kill in the middle to put Immaculate Heart up 26-25. Delatorre scored her fifth ace of the game to provide the winning point, 27-25.
Lillian Mattia and Antone had 7 kills each for Tohono O’odham (1-4). The Lady Eagles will host Alta Vista Thursday night.
Immaculate Heart (2-2) will travel to St. Gregory next Monday. Besides Brown, Ethridge had 8 kills and Delatorre put it 6. Aroz finished with 17 assists.
