Girl’s Volleyball: St. David claims top spot in Division V with win over St. Augustineby Andy Morales on Oct. 24, 2013, under Sports
St. David moved to 9-0 in Section 2 of Division V girl’s volleyball after they swept St. Augustine 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-19) Thursday night.
With the win, the Tigers clenched the section championship and solidified their top ranking by almost 10 power points over Desert Christian. Desert Christian (7-1) is in control of the second automatic playoff spot in the section if they can get past Elfrida Valley Union (7-1) on Friday night at home.
Even without the second spot, Desert Christian is ranked second (as of Thursday night) in D-V and will clearly qualify as an at-large selection as will No. 4 Valley Union, and No. 10 Academy of Tucson.
Too early to call it for No. 12 St. Gregory but they appear to be safe. The killer in D-V is that Sections 1 and 5 are so weak that it looks like the 15th and 16th spot will be given to teams that are barely in top 20 because each section gets two automatic bids. No. 16 Duncan, for instance, would be bumped out of the playoffs to make room for No. 22 Red Mesa (Section 1).
No. 21 St. Augustine (3-7) finished in the top half of the Division after their loss on Senior Night. First-year head coach Adi Encinas had her team well-prepared but they could not match up against the best team in the state at their level.
Encinas is a former multi-year and multi-sport All-Star recognized by the Tucson Citizen during her playing days at St. Augustine several years ago.
Even though the first two sets proved to be difficult, St. Augustine did not fold but actually put up a huge fight in the third set to come back from a 23-11 deficit to make it 25-19. Mandy Jackson put up 9 kills for St. Augustine and Kiana Montoya had 11 assists.
St. David is led by sure-to-be All-State selections Chelsey Stover (11 Kills), Kayla Bradford (9 Kills and 15 Digs) and Rylie Vargas (32 Assists).
Head Coach Tylene Miller led the team to a runner-up finish in 2010 and the school has five state titles with Orland Merrill collecting four of them.
Bowie/San Simon was the last team from Southern Arizona (2007/Casey Lewis) to win a state championship at this level.
The first and second rounds of the D-V playoffs will be held on Friday, November 8 at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. The semifinals and championship match will be held the next day.
