PCC Men’s Soccer Advance to Region I Semifinals
The Pima Community College men’s soccer team (14-6-1) earned the shutout on Monday defeating No. 6 Mesa Community College 2-0 in the Region I, Division I quarterfinals at the Kino North Grandstand.
Arturo Vega (Salpointe Catholic) nailed a shot to the right side of the goal in the 38th minute to put the No. 3 seeded Aztecs up 1-0. In the second half, Christian Garcia-Cabello (Salpointe Catholic) made a tremendous pass to set up Luis Valenzuela (Rio Rico) who scored on his shot to the left side of the goal in the 65th minute.
The Aztecs had 10 shots and Emmanuel Jimenez (Desert View) finished with no saves.
Coming into the game, the Aztecs had split the season series against Mesa. Pima lost 3-2 at the Grandstand and then last Thursday rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3 in overtime in Mesa. The Aztecs are 7-0-1 in their last eight games.
The Aztecs will play at No. 2 Yavapai College in Prescott in the Region I, Division I semifinals on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Pima played two close games against Yavapai this year but lost both. In August, Pima lost 3-2 in two overtimes and lost 2-1 in the closing minutes at the Grandstand. Yavapai also knocked the Aztecs out of the playoffs last season in the Region I semifinals.
