Division IV Boy’s Soccer: Desert Christian gets rematch with Blue Ridgeby Andy Morales on Nov. 01, 2013, under Sports
Desert Christian survived their first round match against Nogales Lourdes Catholic to set up a rematch with Blue Ridge on Saturday. Not only did Blue Ridge beat them earlier this year, they also beat them in the state championship game last year.
It was the third time Blue Ridge had taken out Desert Christian in a title match and, oddly, Desert Christian’s two state championships came at the expense of Blue Ridge. It’s a back-and-forth rivalry that may not always be friendly.
If anything, Desert Christian’s first round match against Lourdes Catholic Thursday night at Udall Park prepared them for whatever may come their way.
Oscar Vasquez put the Warriors up 1-0 in the 11th minute and it looked like Desert Christian would not get that rematch with Blue Ridge. Lourdes Catholic had taken care of Desert Christian 2-1 last Thursday and they appeared to be in control again.
Preston Padilla evened things up nine minutes into the second half on an assist from Tommy McGuire and then McGuire put Desert Christian up 2-1 on an assist from Kit Thompson a minute later.
The two goals resulted in more spirited play from both squads and the Warriors received a red card on one of their standout players and on their coach a few minutes later. Desert Christian remained focused and McGuire (Padilla) scored again in the 58th minute on a corner kick.
Padilla would score the final goal on a breakaway in the 67th minute to go up 4-1. The question that remained had to deal with the lights. With about two minutes left in the match, the lights on the field went out as if to honor Halloween.
The game was played out after 20-minute break.
Desert Christian coach Steve Lord reminded his team that playing Blue Ridge was a team goal and that they could play with anybody as long as they put in a full 80 minutes.
“We are super excited to play Blue Ridge,” said Lord. “Leo Thomas is the only senior remaining from last year and the guys were looking forward to getting him back.”
