Cienega student Jared Aldor (Cienega does not compete in tennis) won the 16 Singles Silver division on Sunday at the USTA Southwest Arizona Junior Championships held at the Reffkin Tennis Center.

Aldor defeated Quinn Gardner (Catalina Foothills).

Local standout Hailey Rochin teamed up with Emily Serrano (Xavier) to defeat Rachana Bhat (Catalina Foothills) and Mariely Hassey (Centennial) in the 18 Doubles final.

Maddie Pothoff is another local standout who does not compete in the high school ranks but will be playing for the 18 Singles championship against Bhat on Monday morning.

Pothoff was paired up with Melissa Pick (Albuquerque) in the 16 Doubles final where they lost to top seeds Allie Sanford and Savannah Slaysman of Phoenix on Sunday.

Gregory Anderson will play for the 16 Singles Gold on Monday and Zaina Sufi (Catalina Foothills) will play in a consolation match in the 18 Singles.

Jackson Lee and Michael Lee will be playing in the 16 Doubles final.

It was a year of winning at the right time.

Salpointe senior Courtney Amos had lost to Xavier’s freshman sensation Madison Clarke way back on April 4 but the tables were turned when Amos defeated Clarke three weeks later in the Division I state championship match.

It was only the second defeat all season for Clarke and Clarke had a chance at revenge during the semifinals of the D-I team competition a few days later but she withdrew due to a reported ankle injury.

The fact that Amos had come back and defeated the top seeded Clarke (7-5, 3-6, 6-0) to take the state championship, combined with her (7-5, 6-4) victory over defending state champion Mariely Hassey of Centennial in the semifinal round, made Amos an easy choice for the state’s top tennis player.

I would have to believe the lack of a rematch in the team competition solidified the choice….such is the life in tennis.

Likewise, Catalina Foothills had defeated Ironwood Ridge twice in the regular season by the same score of 5-4….but, all that matters was the score tabulated on May 5 when the Nighthawks defeated the Falcons 5-4 to take the D-II state team championship.

Kristie Stevens has built a dynasty at Catalina Foothills with 11 state titles since 2000. Stevens is the “Big School” record holder for championships and only needs nine more titles to be the all-time leader regardless of school size.

Ironwood Ridge coach Bill Little pulled a little magic of his own with Sara Brown to overcome all that history. (In fact, two of Catalina Foothill’s titles came at the expense of Ironwood Ridge (2003 & 2004) but not in 2012.)

Brown had lost to Zaina Sufi twice in the regular season but it was her upset victory over Sufi in the team championship match that ultimately proved to be the difference for Ironwood Ridge.

Brown had taken a year off after combining with Marissa Baca to win a doubles title as a freshmen.

Brown and Sufi did not meet in the state singles tournament but Sufi took her top seed all the way to her state championship, something her older sister Hala Sufi did four times in a row from 2000-2003 before moving on to Purdue.

Baca and her best friend Katrina Domingo went into the state doubles tournament as the top seed but Catalina Foothills sisters Rachana & Kirtana Bhat came out on top with a 7-7, 7-5 victory.

Rachana was the 2010 singles champion and the sisters earned runner-up status last year in doubles.

So, it pays to win at the end.

As with the boy’s list, players cannot be listed for both singles and doubles on the same team.

Here are the 2012 Boys Tennis All-Stars. It is obvious that most of the doubles teams can be broken up into top-notch singles players but I tried my best to incorporate as many athletes as I could so that is why I kept the doubles teams intact.

In other words, players could not be listed as both a singles and a doubles athlete.

Every effort was made to look at head-to-head competitions but you will be amazed how many times the best players never met on the court this year.

Matt Dunn and his younger brother Andrew won the Division I doubles championship. They were two examples of players who could have easily been standouts as singles players also.

Matt Dunn will be playing for the University of Arizona next year.

24 teams took part in the 16U division with five pools competing in the morning and then moving into an elimination bracket in the afternoon.

Avery and Gerard placed third and Singleton and Weatherless advanced to the quarterfinals. One team from the group competed in the 18U division. This was the first travel trip for the group to an area that is known for being very strong in beach volleyball. According to the group, the girls noticed right away how deep and soft the sand was. They felt it was better for diving but much harder for getting to the ball and jumping.

“We had a great time this past weekend and did not want it to end!!! I am very proud of the girls for maintaining their composure and respecting the rules during play,” said Claire D’Amore, Director of Desert Sand Volleyball.

“A few of the rules were much ‘looser’ then I prefer, but the experience is invaluable. Looking ahead, we know what we need to focus on as coaches and players.”

Coaches D’Amore, former professional sand volleyball player, her husband Doug D’Amore and Nancy Avery, former Utah State standout, have been extremely passionate about increasing the involvement of this sport in Tucson. They had been conducting sand volleyball clinics at the Mark Jacobs Sports Park to train the girls in preparation for the tournament.

News of who was named to each of the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association (AZBCA) All-Star games is slowly being released.

Empire’s Luke Stangl was the latest Southern Arizona athlete to be notified that he will be playing in the Academic All-Star Baseball Classic in early June.

According to his coach Tom Belter, Stangl holds a 4.39 GPA and will be attending the University Arizona Air Force ROTC program while majoring in Aerospace Engineering.

The artists and scientists who make up the Rillito River Project put on quite a show for the thousands of spectators who were gathered under the bridge near Campbell and the Rillito River Saturday night.

Well, actually, it was the 45,000 Mexican free-tail bats who put on the main show as local dignitaries, artists, musicians, scientists and students officially welcomed the migrating bats to Tucson through music, science and dance.

The Rillito River Project’s Creative Director, Ellen Skotheim, began the project in 1997 in order to, “Increase consciousness of the delicate balance of life and river ecosystems in the desert through art performance and installations.”

The event usually draws several thousand visitors over the last four years but this year’s total reached over an estimated 5,000 spectators who lined the banks of the river and enjoyed the show from the sandy river bottom.

Vice Mayor Karin Uhlich welcomed the crowd to one of Tucson’s “coolest events.”

“We are so lucky to be home to over 45,000 Mexican bats,” Uhlich told the crowd. “Not only do they help pollinate our flowers but they also eat a whole lot of bugs and that helps make Tucson a great place to live.”

Uhlich finished her remarks by calling the event, “Ellen’s love letter to Tucson.”

Mayor Jonathan Rothschild addressed the gathering with a brief history of the project and all the benefits we enjoy from the project and from the bats themselves.

Skotheim gave some closing remarks dedicating the event, “To the River and to the children who will be the stewards of the River’s future.”

Barbea Williams and her performing company worked with University of Arizona students, the students of Rio Vista Elementary and the musical group ” Los Foileros” to put on the official artistic welcome.

Williams worked with the students for about two months with constant visits to the river bed, dance routines and costume making to help the performance go off without a hitch.

The students portrayed bats, baby bats or “pinkies” and insects in conjunction with the dance troupe and Los Foileros.

Next, Dr. Yar Petryszyn fulfilled the science portion of the event through a lively discussion on the habits of the bats, what they eat and their importance.

Petryszyn estimated the bats consume 600 lbs of insects a night and will eat a total of 47 tons while in Tucson. Imagine what Tucson would be without the bats?

All bats are protected through Federal and State laws and Petryszyn dispelled the myth that bats are blind. They actually see quite well even thought they use echolocation.

Therefore, it is recommended that spectators do not use flash photography or make loud noises while visiting the bridge.
