Sabino Senior Sarah Denninghoff led the way at state with two individual championships and two relay championships. She was the first leg of the 200 Yard Medley Relay (Denninghoff, LeighAnne Oliver JR, Caitlin Wright JR, Courtney Dangremond JR) for Sabino where they broke the state record with a time of 1:46.56.

Denninghoff also posted a time in the 200 Free during the season that put her in the top 10 for that event. She also qualified for the USA Swimming National Junior team in 100 Back at the Olympic Team Trials in 2008.

2009 Championships:
Denninghoff also took the 100 Free,100 Back and the 400 Free Relay with Wright, Dangremond and Oliver.

Barrett Miesfeld of Catalina Foothills was one of two top Boys swimmers at state, capturing two individual and two relay championships. The Senior set a new state record in the 100 Butterfly (48.80).

He also posted the fourth best 4AI time in the 100 Breast during the season.

2009 Championships:
Miesfeld won the 200 IM to go along with his Butterfly and he also won the 200 Medley Relay with Rhett Wallace SR, TJ Lundstrom SR and Cole Puchi JR and the 200 Free Relay with Jason Alentado FR, Drew Gyorke SR and Lundstrom.

Cole Puchi
Puchi also won the 100 Free and the 100 Back.

2009 Championships:
200 Medley Relay withWallace SR, TJ Lundstrom SR and Miesfeld. He was also part of the 400 Free Relay with Wallace, Adrian Brynnel and Gyorke.

Izzy Diamond
Won the state championship in Diving. Her sister Hannah came in fourth for Catalina Foothills. Izzy also runs Cross Country but prefers Diving if given a chance to compete at the next level.

Harry Carlson
Came in tenth at state and the phoenix newspaper made a big deal about it because it was their only chance to show anything at state. It doesn’t matter; Carlson has made a steady climb and is now the best in Southern Arizona at the 4A II level.

Coach Lundstrom continues to bring dominance to the pool and he loses Denninghoff , Miesfeld, Wallace and Lundstrom but there is plenty more left for another run next fall.

Diver of the Year: Kerissa Eslick

Chandler Olson spoke at Palo Verde’s Budget Impact Meeting back in April along with fellow students Patricia Garber and Lyssa Saunders. They spoke on the importance of athletics to high school students. Their actions should be celebrated in the swimming community.

Olson and Toner lead Palo Verde to a sixth place finish for Kirsten Pelot.

Olson came in third in the 50 Free and fourth in the 100 Free while fellow Toner came in ninth in both the 100 Butterfly and the 500 Free for Palo Verde. Toner and Olson were both part of the relay team to capture fifth in the 200 Medley Relay with Aimee Alvira and Saunders. Toner and Olson swam in the 400 relay to a fourth place finish with Kaitlynn Pelot and Saunders.

Brandon Young won a championship for Douglas in the 100 Breast – their first ever state championship in swimming. Michelle Cardenas had boys and girls teams finishing in the top two.

Kerissa Eslick is a gymnast where she recently finished in third place to go with her dive accomplishments for Santa Rita.

Coach of the Year: Mary Beth Bleyl

Despite losing her number two and three swimmers, Hope Peterson and Chloe Peterson to eligibility issues with the AIA, Bleyl was able to guide her team to a third place finish in Girls and a second place in Boys.

Swimmers of the Year: Senior Erin Bleyl and Sophomore Daniel Bleyl

Both won a pair of state championships and set new state times in the process. In fact, Erin and Daniel posted times in many events that would have earned them first, second or third place finishes at state but swimmers are confined to two individual events plus two relays or one individual and three relays.

Erin has submitted a Service Academy Nomination Package and will be interviewed sometime around November 21.

Her older sister Shawna is a softball pitcher for Army (US Military Academy at West Point).

“Shawna has had a real positive experience and she is sharing that with Erin,” Mary Beth Bleyl told me. “Erin is real well-rounded and would love to serve her country.”

Erin has visits with both the Air Force Academy and West Point swim coaches scheduled. “Being an athlete is part of the ‘Whole-Man’ concept adopted by the military academies. They look for academics, athletics and leadership.”

According to many sources, Erin has gone beyond the three areas needed to be well-rounded.

It was Daniel who first came up with the notion of following their parents in military service to our country. Wall and Mary Beth Bleyl are graduates of the Air Force Academy.

Erin has also been name to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team.
